“My interest in photography has something to do with the aesthetic and that there should be a little beauty in everything”

Imogen Cunningham
(1883-1976)

This is a modernist masterpiece in the history of photography. Created in 1928, almost a hundred years ago, it is as powerful today as if it had been created yesterday. Imogen was a fearless photographer and managed to balance the obligations of bringing up a family and pursuing her own artistic ambition, no mean feat at the turn of the century.

Imogen understood the magic of light and in this gem of a print she arranged a simple, pure geometric series of shapes that seduces its viewer to lean into the image, to contemplate its power. She cropped her 4” x 5” negative to further accentuate its intimacy. The longer one stares at it the many levels of complexity take over and deliver such a strong emotional punch to the eye and to the heart..
