“If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument."
~ Eve Arnold
Eve was one of Magnum’s great, great photographers. I remember climbing the four flights of stairs to her London apartment arriving somewhat breathless for a tea time appointment. She was completely energizing even though she was getting on in years.
She passed away at 99 years old which I know may have irked her as I’m sure she was determined to be around to make the magic number. Her life was pure determination at a time when it was not easy for a woman to enter the elite stratosphere of photojournalism which was for the most part a male domain. But she got there and found in every situation the potential for fresh insight and often for beauty. A simple wedding ceremony is imbued with such love and passion and hope.
