“A lot of photographers think that if they buy a better camera they’ll be able to take better photographs. A better camera won’t do a thing for you if you don’t have anything in your head or in your heart.”
~ Arnold Newman
"Who sees the human face correctly: the photographer, the mirror, or the painter?"
~ Pablo Picasso
ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
Throughout his career as an artist, Arnold Newman crafted numerous great portraits of Pablo Picasso, the revered painter and sculptor celebrated as a titan of 20th-century art. However, in 1954, Newman diverged from his customary "environmental portraiture" style, shifting the spotlight away from the background and placing it squarely on Picasso himself. He honed in on the intricacies of Picasso’s facial features and his emotive expressions. Picasso has locked eyes with the camera, his hand gently resting upon his forehead, exuding a solemnity uncommon in many other captured moments of the artist.
