“Roller Girls” 1964
#1159 - John Bulmer

“I was driving around Yorkshire and stopped by the bridge. I pretended to be photographing the buildings and switched at the last minute to catch the girls. I met one of the ladies in the picture fifty years later when the BBC did a little film about an exhibition I had in Wakefield. She rang The BBC and said “I’m the girl in the picture”. We were both invited to the studio to meet on air”

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

John Bulmer made his name as one of the key photographers hired by the London Sunday Times in 1964 when they launched their much celebrated color newspaper supplement. His use of color was a breakthrough at the time. With a deep sense of common humanity and insight he was one of the greatest photojournalists of this era at capturing what I term "Slice of life” photography. This image is on the cover of his beautiful book “The North”. Two simple cotton workers leaving their factory after a long day and hopefully about to enjoy their evening.
