“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
~ James Baldwin
ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
The Emergency Civil Liberties Committee's Bill of Rights Dinner in NYC in 1963 brought together two influential figures from different spheres for this great shot: Bob Dylan from the world of music and James Baldwin from the realm of literature.
The event that took place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement and honored Dylan with the prestigious Tom Paine award. One can only imagine what Dylan, known for his socially conscious lyrics, and Baldwin, recognized for his powerful writings on race and identity in America, discussed while seated next to each other. But I have a feeling the pressing issues of racial inequality, social justice, and the role of art and activism may have come up.
A great photograph and a moment that underscores the interconnectedness of art, literature, and social change.
