“I never had a “project”. I would go out and shoot, follow my eyes-- what they noticed. I tried to capture with my camera for others to see”

~ Helen Levitt (1913-2009)

Helen was a very determined and very gifted photographer who had a deep interest in observing the behavior of children on the street. This became her signature style which very few photographers have ever come close to achieving what she achieved. She knew of the work of Henri Cartier Bresson and one day when she was young, happened to observe him wandering the streets in the Village. She bravely approached him and asked whether she could accompany him as he wandered the streets with a camera. He agreed she could. His sense of the perfect moment and watching the master in action never left her throughout her life.
