#1455 - Gordon Parks

“I think that after nearly 85 years upon this planet that I have a right after working so hard at showing the desolation and the poverty, to show something beautiful for somebody as well”

~ Gordon Parks
(1912-2006)

“My clothes are too chic for most women. If they want to wear them all right, but they’ve got to live up to them”

~ James Galanos
(1924-2016)

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Gordon had a long and distinguished photographic career documenting the African- American social experience in his own unique way. A body of work revered for its power and intensity, images once encountered can never be forgotten. But there was another side to him almost at the other end of the subject matter spectrum. He had a real gift for fashion which helped pay the bills and gave him some light escapism from the often unfair world he lived in. Many dress designers are eccentric, intense, demanding characters and James Galanos was no exception to this rule.
