#1275 - Mario Algaze

“The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.”

~ William Faulkner

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Mario Algaze was a Cuban-American photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1947. In 1960, Algaze was forced to leave Cuba and relocated to Miami, Florida at the age of thirteen. He travelled extensively throughout Central and South America, capturing the spirit of Latin America. Algaze’s work masterfully composes light and space to create beautifully balanced moments in time, preserving the rhythm of everyday life.

At first glance, Encuentro is an ordinary scene of the everyday, but to Algaze there is much more to digest. Rather than walking past this moment he chooses to absorb all the details, inviting us to join him on his journey. You can feel the sun beaming through the stone pavement, illuminating the texture of the street and hastiness of the man passing on his left. Algaze generously gives us a welcoming invitation to observe, encouraging us to witness the minuscule and alluring moments we might unknowingly let slip past us.
