ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

After many years of looking at photographs this image by Minor White still remains one of the most mesmerizing I have ever seen. It is simple in it’s depiction of a commonplace thing, an open window. But Minor imbues it with such passion and deep feeling that it becomes something extraordinary.

He was a deeply spiritual man and an important teacher who many photographers sought out for his insight and wisdom. Together with his friends and fellow photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan and the curators, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, he founded the seminal photo magazine Aperture in 1952.

It is an image I return to time and again and still think about. What is coming through the window? Is it a ghost or some kind of powerful mystical and spiritual awakening? I’ll let you decide for yourself.
