“There are no words to convey the moods of those moments. I believe that if I am able to express what I saw and felt, the image will contain qualities that may provide a basis for an imaginative response by the viewer”
~ Ansel Adams
(1902-1984)
ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
This is one of Ansel’s more modern and abstract compositions, with light and form being the dominant forces. He took it in a forest glade on a crisp autumn day in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains mountains north of Santa Fe. At first glance it looks like something you and I could do right? A straightforward arrangement of tree trunks lit by the soft reflection of the evening sky. But dream on! It is an astonishing technical and compositional tour de force by this genius of a photographer. As our great friend John Szarkowski once insightfully said “Ansel Adams great work was done under the stimulus of a profound and mystical experience of the natural world”. Standing in front of this extraordinary physical print, one is deeply moved and left speechless and in awe.
