#1420 - Anastasia Samoylova

White Church, Key West, 2021
#1420 - Anastasia Samoylova

"The White Church in Key West drew my attention because of its perfect compact proportions and a bit of patina, while white picket fences always remind me of Paul Strand’s image. While photographing in Florida in the 1930s, young Walker Evans wrote a letter to a friend listing notable observations about the state, including ‘religion in decay.’ That list is reproduced in my book ‘Floridas,’ which includes this White Church photograph."

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Anastasia Samoylova’s work is deeply intertwined with a sense of place, history, and cultural commentary, making her observations about the White Church in Key West particularly resonant. The church, becomes a symbol not just of architectural beauty, but of the layers of history that Samoylova is so skilled at capturing. One can see her touching on the idea of Americana and the subtle complexities of everyday life, following the tracks of photography giants such as Walker Evans and Paul Strand. She is in constant dialogue between the past and the present, between the classic and contemporary. The White Church photograph isn’t just a snapshot; it’s a continuation of a narrative about place and time that she skillfully weaves throughout her work.
