“A combination of the right choice of detail, the elimination of all that is inessential and the right moment that makes the picture"

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Today's words come from our great friend and London based client, John Randolph. Thank you John for bringing attention to to the seminal British movie “Get Carter” of which Wolfgang Suschitzky was cinematographer. It is one of my all time favourite films. If you have never seen it you are missing out.

"It’s always a pleasure when one of your favourite films pops up on one of your streaming services. It happened to me the other day when “Get Carter” showed up, starring Michael Caine and made in 1971. Primarily shot in the North East of England the film is well known for its portrayal of a grim industrial setting. The cinematography was brilliantly executed by Wolfgang Suschitzky. We all know the expression “multi tasking" and without doubt Wolfgang Suschitzky had the most incredible photographers eye. This made him not only a great photographer but also a highly rated cinematographer.

He has left us with an amazing array of photographs. He manages to make a keenly observed image from a very indifferent setting. His pre and post war settings of street scenes in London are amongst my favourite photographs. “Get Carter” has become a cult classic and a favourite of many film buffs. I don’t think Wolfgang ever got the accolades he deserved and he is still unknown to many ,“Get Carter” reminded me of his genius. I know he is one of Peter’s favourite photographers. He was well known for his modesty and slight surprise at being so highly regarded. He once said “I was always content to be a good craftsman". In his photos and “Get Carter” he certainly was." ~ John Randolph
