#1427 - Edward S. Curtis

"In the beginning, I had no thought of making the series [The North American Indian] large enough to be of any value in the future, but the thing has grown so that I now see its great possibilities, and certainly nothing could be of much greater value."

~ Edward S. Curtis
(1868–1952)

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Edward Curtis was an American photographer and ethnologist renowned for his monumental project The North American Indian, which sought to document Native American cultures through a combination of photography and ethnography. Over three decades, Curtis captured over 80 tribes, producing 20 volumes of photogravures and accompanying text that showcased their traditional ways of life. Funded by J.P. Morgan, the project focused on preserving what Curtis believed were vanishing cultures, though his work was often romanticized and even dramatized for effect. Today Curtis's The North American Indian photographs remain a valuable, visually rich record of Native American heritage, and they continue to be appreciated for their artistry and cultural importance.
