ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

“Throughout my life I’ve never pursued anything. I just let things pursue me, they just show up. This is the way I’ve lead my life, not just in photography but in life”

~ Manuel Álvarez Bravo
(1902-2002)

Don Manuel and Henri Cartier-Bresson had a great long friendship based on mutual respect and shared common interests. They exhibited together on several occasions most importantly in Mexico and the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. I often showed their work together, as they complimented each other so well.

What I learnt from them both is that to be a great, great photographer you have to be a great, great human being. They both were so well read, they knew about history, literature, music, and the arts. They were both extremely cultured and sophisticated and it shows in both of their works. You cannot take a beautiful and tender photograph like this one without being both visually aware and deeply sensitive to human relationships... it is a masterpiece.
