#1374 - William Klein

“Memories, that’s the thing about photography.. I look at the contact sheet and it brings back everything.. Whether I was tired, whether I was full of beans”

~ William Klein
(1928-2022)

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

I don’t think Bill was tired when he took this photo way back in 1955 before Harlem became gentrified like so many areas of New York have. Dare I even mention Brooklyn?

It’s just Bill’s raw energy pumped up to its max. It is almost like he is really joining in whatever urban dance that is going on here. Bill was the original street guy/photographer. A character out of an early Scorsese film. Full of life and optimism, with a kind heart underneath of all his outward punk bravado, and a real belief in the notion of racial harmony and human connection. Such joy.
