“A photograph fulfills my deep need to stop things from disappearing”

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
Dorothy was a gracious, inspiring woman who went out of her way to help others, especially aspiring young photographers. She understood how hard it was to pursue a creative life from her own experience. She was forced to leave her roots and family because of the rise of the Nazis in her home country when she was just a teenager. Her father gave her his Leica camera as she boarded a train to escape the impending horrors.
She dedicated her life to photography and helped set up The Photographers Gallery in London, which was always a spiritual refuge as I grew up there. We enjoyed a lovely tea together shortly before she passed away. I had come by to pick up a group of beautiful prints she kindly made for me. As I left her presence for the last time I realized she belonged to a generation of great humanist photographers who do not exist anymore.
