“Ah! when shall all men’s good
Be each man’s rule, and Universal Peace
Lie like a shaft of light across the land…”

~ Alfred Lord Tennyson,
from the poem The Golden Year, 1842

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Sometimes there is a whole story behind the making of an image that only the photographer knows! Luckily in Wynn's case, his daughter Barbara has so kindly shared some of these stories with me and with you, our dear readers. Enjoy..

"Walter Paepcke, founder of the Container Corporation of America, and his wife Elizabeth had deep passions for art, design, and culture. Elizabeth encouraged Walter and ultimately CCA to embark on an advertising campaign that coupled the words of great thinkers with the visuals of great artists and designers. The result was the groundbreaking “Great Ideas of Western Man” series which ran from 1950 to 1975. In 1984, CCA donated much of the original art from the campaign to the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The ads were created by selecting a “great idea” and commissioning an artist or designer to create a visual response. The image-maker would then submit their work to CCA. If accepted, CCA would produce the ad with nothing more than the image, quote, credits and the CCA logo. The ads ran in magazines like Time and Fortune.

When Dad was sent the above quote from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem The Golden Rule, he made Night Scene, 1959. The print he submitted is now part of the Smithsonian’s collection."

I think Wynn connecting Night Scene with the Tennyson quote is absolutely brilliant! It completely changes my experience with the image.
