#1406 - Lillian Bassman

“It’s about the body, it’s about the gesture, the feeling of being a woman. I can’t intellectualize what I do, and I don’t. A lot of it is purely instinctual"

~ Lillian Bassman
(1917-2012)

ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Photography even from its beginnings in the 19th Century often gave women fortunately a freedom to pursue a professional life beyond the roles of being a wife and mother. Lillian was no exception. Apart from being a great photographer she was a great and influential art director for “Junior Bazaar”. She was experimenting with her craft up till the day she passed away and was just the most wonderful and inspiring person to be around.

We are pleased to include Lillian's images in our exhibition, Her: The Great Women Photographers, celebrates the extraordinary talents of women in photography. Featuring diverse and powerful images by some of the most influential female photographers from across the globe  - iconic images, alongside unseen gems. On view until November 23rd, 2024.
