#1395 - Ruth Bernhard

“I try to be aware of light at all times, I am always watching for it. I am not looking at light because I am a photographer. I am photographing because I am deeply involved with light”

~ Ruth Bernhard
(1905-2006)

Ansel Adams called Ruth “The greatest photographer of the female nude". One only has to look at this photograph, one of her most important nudes to understand why he was prompted to make this comment. It is like a great piece of sculpture, something that Rodin or Henry Moore or Barbara Hepworth might have produced.

We are proud to include Ruth Bernhard's work in our next exhibition, Her: The Great Women Photographers which will be on view August 17th - November 23rd, 2024. The exhibition will feature a selection of photographs by female photographers, from across the history of the medium. We encourage you to join us for this wonderful exhibition and RSVP for our opening reception Saturday August 17th, 2024, between 4:00 - 6:00pm.
