“I tried to get under their skin. What if I were one of their colleagues? Working with the same equipment, and with my interest in zoology, what would I have come up with? My thinking was, what if one of those photographers were interested in wildlife?”

The porcupine fish, is a fascinating marine creature, renowned for its unique appearance. Found in tropical waters around the world, this fish has a remarkable ability to inflate its body by ingesting water or air, transforming itself into a spiky, balloon-like shape as a defense against predators. When inflated, the porcupine fish becomes significantly larger, making it challenging for predators to swallow or attack. Despite its formidable appearance, the porcupine fish is generally not aggressive and feeds on a diet of crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. Its intriguing adaptation and captivating appearance makes it a captivating subject of marine biology but also one I think we can all relate to on certain days.
