Mario Giacomelli was born August 1st, 1925 in Senigallia, Italy. At the age of thirteen, Giacomelli found work as an apprentice at the Typography Giunchedi until the Second World War. In 1950, he opened his own typography when an elderly woman (from the hospice his mother worked at) granted him all her life savings, and created the Typography Marchigiana via Mastai 5. Three years later, he bought a Bencini Comet S camera. Giacomelli's training as a typographer would later influence his interest in graphic effects in his photography.
Giacomelli would go on to win numerous medals and prizes, and achieved international status through numerous exhibitions throughout Europe, America, and Japan. His highly personal, artistically atmospheric visual style demonstrates a life-long preoccupation with landscapes that emphasize linear and abstract patterns, rural townscapes, street scenes, and portraits of everyday Italian life. His work displays a profound understanding of the country and its people and a mastery of form and effect. This mastery and understanding render Giacomelli's works innovative and captivating.
